Offline Installation of various packages & dependencies for UBUNTU 8.10

Asked by codingfreak

I am new to UBUNTU and started with UBUNTU 8.10 in my older desktop system.

I have a problem regarding offline Updation. Incase of Windows we can manually install the security patches and other major updations. But I have some problems with manual updation in UBUNTU.

My UBUNTU system does not have an Internet connection. But I do have a Windows system with Internet Connection. So is there any easy way where I can directly download updates along with the dependencies and burn to a CD so that I can install in my UBUNTU system.

I came across some tutorials where they say to copy the updates from the friends UBUNTU system which is not possible in my case. I also learnt about something called alternate cd. Does the alternate cd has the updates and other packages which are not available in live cd ?

Alternate CD comes with the same packages as Live CD, only installer is text based. No, Ubuntu doesn't offer Windows service pack type updates that you want.

The best thing to do will be to go a friend's place who has Internet and has download the updates. Install APTonCD on that friend's system, then burn all the updated software files to a CD using APTonCD. (Your friend must keep a note of which packages have been updated.) Then, you can use that CD to install the updates you want.

Thats what I amsaying previously .... is there any other method other than the one which you said .... "Downloading from Friend's PC" ...... as there are no UBUNTU users in my place with an Internet Connection.

I know that i cant download the individual updates as there are chances of breaking the dependencies ...

Come on there should be a more easy way ... atleast something like "AUTOPATCHER" software for microsoft.

No. As I mentioned earlier, there are no service pack style update packages for Ubuntu.

However, if you're not connected to the Internet in the first place then you already have a very secure system. In Windows, even when you don't have an Internet connection you need to keep installing updates because there are chances that a virus may be trying to exploit a security flaw which has been patched. Ubuntu is _already_ a very secure platform. Most of the updates are small, incremental performance updates or feature updates - which you can get easily by installing when a new Ubuntu version comes out every six months. True, there are security updates too - but frankly most of them won't be such a big issue if you're connected to the Internet in the first place.

So rest assured and enjoy your Ubuntu experience. :)

For Ubuntu users without the internet, keryxproject.org is the key. Its motto is "Bringing updates home", and that's exactly what it does. It is cross-platform, so it will work on your Windows machine. It is a portable package manager for Debian-based systems, and is almost as intuitive as Synaptic. I think it should be your cup of tea, Ajith.
