How to increase screen resolution setting

Asked by Kris Holt

I have been able to install other linux distros, which allowed me to set screen resolutions greater than 1028 x 968, but this is the highest option I am offered for Ubuntu 9.04.

I have a nVidia TNT2 Vanta AGP graphics card with PowerPort Technology with 16MB of SDRAM video memory with a NEV Multisync XV17 monitor with a 60Khz horizontal freq and 75 Hz vertical freq.

Can I change any system settings so I can set a higher resolution?

Use the instructions for Intrepid Ibex (8.10) except, there is no virtual package nvidia-glx.

I used the Applications menu and visited the Add/Remove menu item and selected to install the appropriate legacy nvidia driver. Then I edited my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and changed the "Screen" section and Subsection "Display" to change the "Virtual 1024 768" to "Virtual 1920 1200". Now I can go into my System menu, Preferences menu, and Display menu item and select higher resolutions that provide a smaller, readable, monitor display.

Viola! Bravo!
