WINE can't be updated
Hi:
When I receive the Software Updater list of packages that have updates, WINE is included, but I can't check it for download and installation. Any ideas to solve this? Thanks

The confusion is no problem for me.
Already asked above:
Do you want to install the older version from the standard Ubuntu repositories, or the newest one from winehq.org?
To install the Ubuntu standard version you need the command given by actionparsnip:
sudo apt-get install wine-stable
You have added the repository from winehq.org. This allows - if you want - to install the newer version available there with the command
sudo apt-get install winehq-stable
You should select only one of these!

I'm really not sure which one to install. The repository that I have for WINE is the one that, as far as I remember, I have been using. Now I see that I have two possibilities. I just want to have the version that receives updates from the Software Updater without any problems. I don't have technical competence to evaluate which one is better. Your advice is appreciated. Thanks.

You have wine already installed, and as far as I can see, then version that you have is the newest that is available on winehq for bionic. So what is the point of your question?
What is the output of

Manfred:
My original problem is that I keep receiving update notifications for WINE from the Software Updater app that can't be executed. This has been happening during the last few weeks. So, from the Software Updater perspective WINE needs to be updated but doesn't let me do it. If the version of WINE that I have is the latest, then my problem is somewhere else.

What do you mean with "receiving update notifications for WINE from the Software Updater app that can't be executed"?
If you open the update-manager program, you probably get a notification that some packages can be updated. If you just press "install updates", what happens? Do you see any warnings or informational messages?

Manfred:
When the update-manager program opens, among other updates, I see two notifications for the WINE program. When I press install updates, the other updates get installed except WINE. No warnings or informational messages. It only happens when I receive notifications from the system, not when I locally execute the update-manager app. The next time it happens, I'm going to take a screen shot to show. I should have done this before. Sorry, my bad!

All packages with problems are coming from the winehq repository. So this definitely is not an Ubuntu problem, but a problem related to winehq.
Why are you using that foreign source instead of the Ubuntu repository?
Are you sure that you correctly followed the instructions on https:/

Manfred:
As far as I can remember, I, for some unknown reason (some years ago) I started using the winehq repository on all my pcs. I didn't experience any problems up until now. I haven't experienced any problems with my other machines (they have old versions of Linux, though).
The answer to the question about the instructions on the winehq site is no. I haven't because, as is already discussed elsewhere, I normally press install on the update-manager app and assume that all the technical details of the installation are taken care of. I surmise then, that you are telling me to follow the instructions on the winehq site to see if that solves the problem. Will go there to find out.

Then why go straight to the PPA? It makes no sense. Yes, you'd need to remove the install of WINE. Remove the PPA then try the WINE from the official repo which will install without any issues.
