Connect HP Laptop with Ubuntu18-04 to another monitor

Connecting HP laptop 15 da0xxx with Ubuntu 18-04 to a monitor with HDMI lead, will only display the computer screen background ( Bionic Beaver) on the second monitor , but nothing else . How do I make the second monitor display the same images as on the computer screen ?

Can you not drag your mouse to the other monitor (Desktop extend) or do you have it in mirrored mode?

Hi Andrew .
I discussed my problem with a friend who told me about toggling the f4 key to select the various options on the screens.
He also told me how to alter the sound configuration on the computer to get sound out of the second monitor .
