web file server lighttpd 403 error serving /home/user/movies

Asked by Galen Thurber

I'm trying to get lighttpd to serve up media files on my LAN

I've set the www root to /home/user/Movies

enabled dir-listing enabled in lighttpd config
changed permissions on the data folder to user:www-data 755

restarted lighttpd
but I get 403 forbidden

any ideas?

Does the account running lightpd have read access to the data? If no, that's why

"403 forbidden" means that lighttpd is unable to access root. As described above it has to have root access read the data.
You will have to check if the default settings give it root access.
