Login screen does not show after update

Asked by Long Hoa Cao Phuc on 2020-01-18

Dear expert,

After the daily update, my laptop hangs when booting. The login screen does not show up. I even tried to use recovery mode but it did not work. Some attempts to edit the GRUB menu (like adding nomodeset, etc) did not work either.

I didn't check the update carefully but when I check the update history (I looked at /var/log/apt/history.log), it seems that the issues happened after kernel is updated to 5.3.0-26.

I tried to remove that version and rolled back to 5.0.0-37-generic, I can boot my laptop and everything seems ok. What should I do to make sure that this is a problem causing by the kernel?

Thanks a lot,

Which Ubuntu release are you running (I assume 18.04 bionic with HWE)

What you could do:
Reconfigure grub to show the grub menu with every boot (edit /etc/default/grub and set GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu etc.)
Let the system install the 5.3.0-* version again
From now on you can select in the grub menu which kernel version to boot (default is 5.3.0-*, for the 5.0.0-* version use "advanced")

If you can then consistently show that the 5.0 version boots well, and the 5.3 version doesn't - then this can serve s evidence.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I tried your method and it showed that 5.3.0-26 does not work, while 5.0.0-37-generic boot well.

Thanks,

There is now kernel version 5.3.0-18.19 available. Does this also fail the same way?
