The Intel graphics driver code is going through some major development and there are a number of known problems. You may wish to read the following page and consider rolling back to an older driver.

Go to a terminal and type:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and add the following lines to the file:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/siretart/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/siretart/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Save it, and close the window. Next type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4

You may get a warning, but you should ignore that.

I can add to this by saying I have the same issue. I have found that mine appears to be related to network activity. If I am disconnected from my wireless network, or not browsing the web/using Pidgin/etc, I don't see the flicker, but my screen will begin flickering as soon as I have alot of network activity.

I tried to use the proprietary madwifi driver, but I was unable to connect to my wireless with this driver. Could this be related to the issue being discussed?

Just a trivial question, did you try to turn off compiz and run the default window manager metacity?

Revision history for this message
Matthew Hilinski (mhilinski2) said :

i uninstalled compiz but how do i rrunthe default window manager metacity?

Revision history for this message
Philip Wyett (philwyett) said :

It automatically falls back to using metacity by default when compiz is removed.

Revision history for this message
Sam_ (and-sam) said :

metacity --replace

You may also check if compositing for metacity is disabled, open gconf-editor, navigate to
/apps/metacity/general - compositing_manager

Are there any errors in Xorg.0.log (system administration -> system log)
grep -i error /var/log/Xorg.0.log

/apps in the apps column i do not see /metacity/general-compositing_manager

am i doing something wrong???

Matthew,
metacity --replace
is a command to type in the terminal, the output will probably tell you that it's already running.
The process of metacity can be viewed also in system administration -> system monitor

Please type this in a terminal and post the output here:
gconftool --get /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager

 here is what the log says my graphics driver

No Layout section. Using the first Screen section.
(**) |-->Screen "Default Screen" (0)
(**) | |-->Monitor "Configured Monitor"
(**) | |-->Device "Configured Video Device"

does this configuration sound right???

how do i see what kind of driver i am using
?

(II) LoadModule: "radeonhd"

.. indicates I'm using the radeonhd driver. Why don't you just roll back to Intrepid?

(**) means that Xorg.0.log takes this from the config file (xorg.conf), it's also explained in Xorg.0.log
The mentioned output for screen section is regular, since dynamic configuration took place.
Example:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20233613/xorg.conf

How do I know about drivers, I'd type in the terminal:
grep drivers /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The issue of flickering on laptops in some cases had to do with display dimming.
Options are in gconf-editor /apps/gnome-power-manger and system preferences -> power management
