Google Chrome won't start - Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS

Latest Google Chrome won't start on my fully patched Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS box.

Launching Chrome within a shell throws

process is stalled after that.

Any hints welcome!

If you rename the chrome config folders which live inside of ~/.config then run the browser, does it run OK? You will get vanilla settings but it will sync up once you log in to the service
