Ubuntu 19.10 freezes for a while when mounting/ejecting external HDD

Whenever I stick my 2TB external hard drive into the USB, the UI freezes. The sound keeps working and the mouse moves though. It takes 30+ seconds for the UI to unfreeze. The same happens when I eject the HDD.
