Applications will log as they run and auth.log logs logins to the system.

Can you please expand the question. It is too broad to reply with anything useful

just wanted to ask if i were to accidentally delete some logs files would this damage the ubuntu system or would everything still work ok?

The purpose of the log files is recording events, such that you can investigate what happened (in case that you want to).
They are not needed for operation and usually will be re-created (without past contents) if they are deleted.

What kind of "accident" should cause the deletion of some log files? I can imagine that any accident that deleted some log files might also delete files that are required for running the system.

Can you help with this problem?
