KDE4 is crap

The menu should be navigable using the keyboard but alt-F1 won't even open it now. Adding Third Party software to the repositories crashes every time. My webcam (logitech webcam communicate stx) no longer works in most of the apps it used to work in on 8.04. It used to work in everything except kopete. Storage Media is no longer available under Computer. It used to take 2 clicks to restart or shut down the system, now it takes 3 clicks. There was no reason Administrator Mode should have been removed from System Settings. I have not been able to find how to change the size of the menu.

I am a firm believer of KISS and it appears to me that you are making things more complicated than simple. The fancy interface is nice but NOT at the expense of things working.

Yes, KDE4 was a real dud.

I heard a lot of KDE fans were switching to Gnome.

I say run a system upgrade if you haven't already. If all else fails rollback to an older version.

yes and no: a few things don't work like the webcam in pgms that it used to work in and most things do but not as I expect them to.

I have tried to add third party software to the repostories the python2.6 crashes everytime.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this but have you ever considered using Gnome?

I'll tell you that I run Gnome on all the desktop computers in the house and I never have any problems with it.

KDE4 may still have a lot of problems, even at it's latest release.

You can install Gnome very easily in apt-get and it will run side by side with KDE4. Just select it at the login screen options. This will allow you to continue using Ubuntu until KDE4 is fully functional.

you could also give other wms a try, like xfce or enlightenment.

personally, i never could figure out how to use enlightenment so i never cared for it much, but xfce is pretty nice... always seemed like a cross between gnome and kde3 without all the fluff and baggage. additionally, they can all be installed straight from the repos, and used in parallel just like phoozle described for gnome

Xfce is great! I use it on my server for VNC access. It is also compatible with Gnome apps as well because it is based on GTK+. Xfce is great for performance and low spec computers.

I just find Gnome has more graphical configurable options out of the box. But hey, try all the GUIs available for Ubuntu and see what suites you best.

That's the brilliant thing about Linux! Your not stuck with M$ Windozzz Explorer...

Sorry guys, but I don't see a bug relevance in this report, it's more or less a forum discussion. Maybe you should separate your issues into separate bugs, otherwise it will be difficult to address the issues and check which ones are resolved in the latest KDE 4.2.2 release and which are not:

Fast, simple, "K.I.S.S. - like", but Ubuntu Repositories.
