I seems to restart ok but then it just leaves the monitor with two ubuntu Icons and that it. I've tried to repair from and ubuntu 8.10 cd but on restart it stays with the two icons

have you tried booting to recovery mode (esc at grub) and seeing if you can startx from there

if you reinstall, make sure you backup the files from /home. if your /home is on a seperate partition, you have no cause to worry as you can simply wipe /. The standard install does not configure this way (which i think is rubbish of ubuntu)

just backup your data (you should have a backup anyway if the data is important) then reinstall if the notion takes you.

Well you should have a backup. What would you do if the hard drive failed? Your data is unimportant and disposable

Can you help with this problem?
