Trying to install ubuntu 19.10 install/try screen no show

Asked by peter ratcliffe

I have followed install ubuntu desktop tutorial to install ubuntu 19.10 on a newish machine. Yesterday I got as far begin installation only to be told no root file system is defined. The computer I want to discard boots to ubuntu 18.04 and then goes straight to its normal desktop files. Please point me in the right direction.
Thank you, from Peter Ratcliffe

You need to set a partition as "/". This is the root file system. If you are wiping the install off then you can simply tell the installer to use all of the disk and it will make the disks as required (this will wipe all data on the drive)

Based on the question and answers in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/686598 I assume that you have prepared a DVD for installing Ubuntu. Is that correct?

Does that "newish machine" already have an operating system installed?

What is the relation between "the computer I want to discard" and the "newish machine"?

Manfred,
I have a dvd burnt with ubuntu 19.10. I can only assume that that worked ok because I managed to start the install but got stuck when I got to no file system is defined. At that point I gave up. Tried again but this time, what ever I did I got the normal ready to work screen. As far as I know the newish machine has ubuntu 18.04 but I cant confirm that. There is no relationship between my two machines, I just want to be able to use the newish one which has SSD disks: and the other one, not the newish one, seems to have a few issues.

I have tried using the dvd both complete, in which the boot happens normally, and pressing F11 while it boots to bring up the two illustrations on the welcome screen. Which is correct? While all this was going on I think the computer hung; all the little red dots kept appearing, one at a time, until manual switch off.

Look forward to hearing from you, Peter Ratcliffe

If the new machine already has Ubuntu 18.04, why do you want to install Ubuntu again?

Please don't mix the issues of two different computers in one single question document.

It is the old machine which has ubuntu 18.04. What I am aiming for is the "newish" to be working properly and then the old one can be thrown away.

If you just switch on the new machine, what happens?

Manfred, seems I have boobed again, sorry humble pie is being eaten.

If I switch on the old computer it comes up with the screen I would expect and "about" says Ubuntu 18.04.s 64-bit. The opening screen has an icon labelled Ubuntu 19.10 amd64. If I click on it I get a list of 12 items, mostly Folders dated 17 Oct 2019. The burnt dvd disk was in the drive when I was typing this. The old computer has issues I can't understand so I would be quite happy to simply replace it if that is possible. Would re-install be an option and if so what command will that need.

As ever your advice will be most welcome.

I am lost.
I thought it is agreed that we talk about the new computer in this question document, and not the old one?

What happens if you Switch on the NEW Computer (without insertung the installation DVD).
Do you get some kind of "no operating system found" message, or something different?

We are both lost. I suggest we call it quits. If I have a fresh idea I may come back to you. Thanks
