19.10 on HPZbook 15 G6, fan speed issue

Asked by Peyrega

Hello,

I just had my work laptop upgraded from a HP Zbook 15 G3 to a HPZbook 15 G6, and I went for installing Ubuntu 19.10 in dual boot (on a separate NVMe drive) next to W10.

The machine features a i9-9880H and a NVidia RTX3000 GPU.

After install and a few trials following usual "fan noise tutorials" i'm facing a high fan noise level (fans always on) which I did not experienced with the older ZBook 15 G3

This morning, I tryied installing the dtpf layer from intel https://github.com/intel/dptf as I saw that the bios has a DPTF enabled "ON" option by default, but this did not changed anything.

hardinfo do not report any fan speed in the sensors branch.

Any clue / hints / request to provide more usefull data for investigation on that subject would be welcome.

Your system has that switching GPU system. I've seen laptops have fan issues if this is not configured properly. I believe you need prime or bumblebee to support this technology. I don't use it myself and avoid it on purpose but am aware of it

Make sure you have the latest BIOS too

Hi,

I already have the latest bios (01.03.04 Rev.A), and I check both BIOS settings for the graphics card :
Hybrid (=Nvidia+Intel) or Discrete (=NVidia only)
my old G3 had the same kind of settings but both were running ok.

Installed 19.10 back and proceeded with dmesg.

I have a few red lines in it that I reproduced here the part I believe to be relevant here :

Solved :

it seems the issue came from not entering the secure boot password on the "MOK" page that showed up after boot.
reading the small lines (which I have not done before... my bad...) says that ubuntu will still boot, but some proprietary drivers / devices may fail to load.

So in short, don't forget to enter the secure boot password in the blue "MOK" page (additionnal hint, the keyboard was in qwerty while i have a physical azerty one, so that was the last final trick to pass)
