Sounds are weak in jaunty

Asked by roger

All sounds are about 1/8th the volume of what they were in intrepid. Is there a fix for this? Dell Inspirion 1420 that came with Ubuntu 7.10. No hardware changes. This applies to ALL sound sources and types from whatever media. Have tied all GUI settings without any noticeable change. Have not tried adjusting anything via terminal.

I found the fix at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-utils/+bug/316430/comments/2. Seems alsamixer comes muted.

--
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop
alsamixer -c0
#changing some levels
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start
#everything is reset again to the level before stop like it is to be expected.

Thanks for your reply! BTW, "Report a problem" links under jaunty's Help does not work either! Haven't searched for a fix to that -- yet....
