Upgrading using 9.04 Cd

Asked by Tom

Lol, slightly embarrassing question but i downloaded Jaunty, burned cd, checked md5sum and all was looking good. Got here to the boat that has a slow and limited connection but now seem to have trouble adding the Jaunty Cd to the repositories. Software Sources only has the 8.10 Cd listed and that's already ticked. Any clues on how to get the Jaunty Cd recognised?

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

I would recommend booting from the Jaunty cd and just overwriting your current install, it won't overwrite your /home directory so you won't lose any data there, but you most likely would lose any customizations outside that directory. I would recommend reading the installation guide before beginning so you are aware of any other caveats. You can find that here: https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/installation-guide/i386/index.html (i386)

Open Software Sources, go to the Third-Party Software tab, put your 9.04 CD into the player and click "Add CD-ROM".

Un-tick the 8.10 CD entry.

Tom, I have never tried the method I described above although I cannot see any reason why it would not work provided that your current installation is up-to-date,

The easiest method is actually just inserting the 9.04 CD (alternate) while 8.10 is running. This will generate a screen with the option to upgrade.

Thanks Andre, your first answer did work. I don't know why i couldn't get the cd just upgrading normally but your suggestion allowed me to install a few things after the install.

Thanks and regads from
Tom :)
