getting virtual machine to read usb

I am trying to run a windows virtual machine but i cannot install windows from my usb. I have tried Virtualbox and QEMU, neither will show the drive is even there. I am ready to throw my laptop in the lake. Please help, I have spent about 10 hours on this.

The easiest way to install an operating system in a VirtualBox VM is by copying the installer .iso file to the hard disk of the host system, and then specifying that .iso file as virtual CD when starting the new VM the first time.
