(Mainline Kernel) Problem during installation / 5.4.0 - Rc4

Asked by Toby Gornow

Hi,

Since there's no way to "simply" report a small bug on launchpad, each time they send me back to documentation and how to use Evince & apport, I'm posting my report here hoping it will be read by someone at Canonical and be forwarded to the right person or team.

Now to the bug, I've just installed the latest mainline kernel from the PPA 5.4.0-050400rc4-generic with all the right Amd64 .deb and during installation I had a strange line :

"Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/amdgpu/navi10_mes.bin for module amdgpu"

I'm using Mainlines since RC1 and I've never encountered this error. So I checked in /lib/firmware/amdgpu the files I've previously copied from Kernel-git and no navi10_mes.bin. There's a navi10_me.bin, navi10_mec.bin & navi10_mec2.bin so I'm strongly believing it's just a typo in the installer.

I know Canonical doesn't provide support for Mainline Kernel and I'm not asking for it, I'm just reporting and will surely rollback to RC3.

I took time to write this please forward to the right person or team.

1. You _can_ manually report a bug without apport. The link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug redirects to the documentation but there is a special paragraph
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Filing_bugs_manually_at_Launchpad.net
with a link http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/PACKAGENAME/+filebug?no-redirect (replace PACKAGENAME by the relevant source package name).

2. For the message about the navi10_mes.bin firmware:
I do not think that this message is wrong, see e.g. https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/software/general-linux-open-source/1117901-linux-5-3-rc3-comes-in-as-a-calm-release?p=1118011#post1118011 and https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/mes_v10_1.c
