After the server install it goes to " localhost" login and doesn't accept any information

Asked by Craig Spector-Howell

I have tried to get the ubuntu 18.x.x install, after each installation it defaults to " localhost login" or localhost.localdomain login.
But there's no way to get past that screen and into the username I have created. Is there a secret root password? I have tried a few different download to a disk and too a stick and it's always the exact same problem . Please help!

After booting you should get a "login:" prompt.
Are you able to type the username and press the enter key?
In the next line you should then get a "password:" prompt.
Here you should type the password that has been defined during installation. Please be aware, that when entering the password, you do not get any feedback on screen (no echo, not even '*' placeholders). Just 'blind' type the password and press the 'enter' key.
What happens?
