No audio: Acer Veriton M460 / Ubuntu 8.10

Hi:
I just installed Ubuntu on my Acer M460 & everything works fine, except the audio. The audio worked before the install, and nothing was changed; now, there's no audio at all. I went to system/preferences/sounds & everything was on auto and the default mixer is set to ALSA PCM on front. I'm something of a ludite, & have no idea what to do next. Would somebody please help me.
