no taskbars after login, only desktop appears

Asked by Neil

I've recentry upgraded my Dell Inspiron Mini 9 from the Dell-supplied Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 (by downloading the Netbook remix image from the Ubuntu website). After initially restarting to complete the installation, it worked fine. I switched to the 'classic' desktop mode. Now, when I turn the computer on again, after I've logged in, I only get the desktop: no taskbars. I can still open the sole icon on my desktop (install_flash_player_10_linux.deb) and I can "change desktop background", but other than that, I can't do much without the taskbars. What's happened and how do I get them back?

Thanks,

Neil

Thanks for your reply. Alt+F2 doesn't work for some reason. Opening a virtual terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F1 worked though. I then followed the steps in the link you gave me. No errors were returned for each step, but unfortunately my gnome panels aren't there when I press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to the desktop. I've tried this twice (restarting the computer each time) and tried both the original first step and the 'edited' first step on the webpage but neither give me my panels back.

Notifications still seem to work as I just got a battery low notification, if that helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Neil

I'm having the same problem.

I tried running those commands from the link in the terminal that opens with Ctrl+Alt+F1, and it just tells me that no such command exists.

Hmmm maybe. I can use the panels when they're there! When they're not there, nothing happens when I click where I expect them to be.

Hi Neil, from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher/+bug/361625

I follow the following steps and succeed to turn it back:

1. right click on background
2. click on create launcer
3. type xterm to name
4. type xterm to command
5. click ok
6. double click on xterm (icon created above)
7. type desktop-switcher and press enter
8. choose Ubuntu Netbook Desktop and Apply

(you can also use desktop-switcher instead of xterm but the terminal may be useful for other bugs!)

George

Thanks George. However, I tried creating a desktop switcher launcher and my results are detailed at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/366109 . Basically, if I use the desktop switcher launcher to switch back to the netbook remix interface and then restart, I get the netbook remix interface without a taskbar! No combination of desktop switching and restarting solves the problem for me.

Does anyone know why this problem is occuring? I wouldn't expect to have this problem seeing as I'm using the final release! Would using the standard version of ubuntu on my dell inspiron mini 9 be likely to work and to not have this buggy behaviour? Or would reinstalling gnome or something work?

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil,
I did a fresh install from the same USB disk. I select "use password at login" (old style). After the installation I boot (Netbook Desktop look) and the first thing was to change desktop to Standard (old type). Then I shut down. Boot again. All panels in their position!

After above, I attach my 3G modem, setup the connection, choose a closer repository (to be faster) and I made all upgrades suggested (most of them were Firefox, one was X... i do not remember). Reboot.

All working fine now. I don't know what caused the problem. I was close to leave Ubuntu for a month to "grow up" and be debugged by others.

Hope this will be a stable condition!

I thought I'd do a "check disk for defects" before I reinstalled and it's come up with "check finished: errors found in 1 files!" It would be nice if it told me which file! I think I'll burn the image to the flask disk again first before reinstalling. The md5sum for the image was fine when I downloaded it. After that I'll try reinstalling and hope it works!

Thanks,

Neil

Ok I've done this now exactly as you described, but the panels aren't there once I've rebooted :-( Also, when I wrote the image to the flask disk again, I did a "check disk for defects" and it still came up with "check finished: errors found in 1 files!". Cheers for the help anyway!

More ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Neil

Vladlonescu posted a workaround at the bug report that worked for me. He just created a launcher to restore the taskbars initially, then added the panels and window manager to the startup processes:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/366109/comments/4

My taskbars are restored!!

I pretty much solved the problem by installing the replacement desktop switcher from another thread, although switching to netbook remix mode still gave the error message. I don't need to use the remix mode though so I think I'll stick with classic mode for now!

Thanks,

Neil

I tried switching to remix mode and back to classic just to test it, and first time it worked, but second time switching to remix mode it kinda got stuck half way between classic and remix mode! I had to restart the computer to get it back to classic mode.

Lol, that's not sounding good. It might be worth posting this as a new question here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
and maybe in a few other forums too
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToGetHelp

My current favourite other forum is a more general linux one
http://www.linuxquestions.org
but highly specific Ubuntu questions may lead more to humorous responses than to people really being able to help, you never know tho ;)
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
