Asked by Richard A Spearnock

I have the dell 962 and a gift from my son the epson v30 scanner. But both of us can not find good working drivers for linux, ubuntu 9.04. Does anyone know where we can get the drivers?

The Dell (Lexmark) 962 multifunction centre is listed as a paperweight on this site:
http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Dell-Photo_AIO_Printer_962

This site claims to have a Linux driver:
Dell 962 http://www.printcountry.com/drivers/DELL_962_DRIVER_DOWNLOAD.htm

There are a several URLs for Linux drivers for the Epson scanner. Type "epson perfection v30 in ubuntu" into the Google search bar. Some of these drivers come at a price.

It may be a paperweight but many people have 962's and they still work very well. Also the epson v30 is new and with all the other epson coverage (including the v30) it should have been included in u 9.04.

I would prefer to do away with windows and use ubuntu 9.04 exclusively. This is not possible. I am not going to throw away perfectly good hardware to use on a "free OS system".

I understand your frustration on this issue, Richard.

Some manufacturers of peripheral computer equipment decided to follow the Microsoft model of keeping their code secret and thereby creating a barrier to having their product work regardless of which operating system is preferred by their customers. Fortunately, some of these manufacturers have come to realise that these practices reflect a poor business sense and have made efforts to create Linux drivers.

If you want to get your Dell 962 to work in Ubuntu, you should direct your complaint to Dell and similarly to Epson in regard to the scanner although there is a driver available from: http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL1.do

When you were using the Windows operating system you bought equipment that you expected to work with Windows. Now that you want to use Linux you will have to buy equipment that works with Linux.

If the equipment you have only works with one operating system then it cannot be called "perfectly good hardware".

The Dell 962 gets some rather mixed reviews:
http://reviews.cnet.com/multifunction-devices/photo-all-in-one/4505-3181_7-31232213.html

I have been in the same situation that you are in now and had to discard a "perfectly good" Canon scanner that would not work in Linux. I bought an HP Photosmart All-in-One, plugged it in and everything worked.

Thank you for your kind response to the questions.  The memory stick deal did work for attachments to Emails.  It is sort of a pain, but until I can afford new hardware this will have to be it.  I did contact Dell and Epson.  My son bought the V30 sort of blindly since he knew so many Epson machines were already supported.  Thanks again, Richard
