Data and blank CDs do not auto-mount in Kubuntu Feisty

Asked by G Allen

Hello:

I installed Kubuntu Feisty (fresh install, was raw HDD). It's beautiful! Everything worked perfectly after install. After the PC had been in use for a few days however, and rebooted several times, I have noticed that data (already written) and blank CDs are not automatically recognized. Factory music CD and DVDs are working fine (automatically recognized/mounted). The same CDs work fine on my notebook PC with Ubuntu Feisty, but that PC has been running Ubuntu since 6.06...upgraded to edgy and then feisty over time.

I did write a simple shell script that will mount them, based on what I observed in /etc/fstab, but unmounting them (shell script for that, too) is problematic and I sometimes have to turn the PC off and eject the CD while it's rebooting. Ubuntu on the notebook has the CD-RW/DVD-ROM mounted differently in /etc/fstab. The same line copied into /etc/fstab on my Kubuntu machines does nothing.

I did a lot of looking around in the forum and noticed a few people having this kind of problem. Most of the issue reports for this problem seem to remain unresolved. Those that were resolved made no sense, almost as if the poster closed the request with no solution. I also noticed a bug written up on this issue, quite extensively in fact. However... I can't find a fix that I can make any sense out of, and don't see a patch for it. I use this system at home, but have the identical problem at work. Is there a fix or workaround I can actually do?

I apologize in advance for the newbie-like request. I have a few useful skills at the command line, but not too many... <g>

Thanks for the question.

I am not sure why it particular CDs are mounted but others not. This might be a general bug, I have heard about this before. I will have to do some research for this, However, there might be a solution for you problems unounting. Did you ever try to umount -lf <device>? This does a lazy force umount and has so far always worked for me.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, Ralph! I will add the switches to umount in my script.

All the best! :)

Note: I'm going to leave this one open with the hope of getting automatic mounting and recognition back.

Gary,

you might want to look at this https://bugs.beta.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/95868. This seems to describe more or less what you are describing. There is also a reference to as HAL patch
