how do i get a controller so i can plug in and update maps on y gps

i have a garmin etrex venture hc and i want to add some maps but dont have anything with windows. so is there a way to do this on ubuntu? if so can you walk me threw it?

(Note, you have to use a current Java package instead of sun-java6-jre, perhaps openjdk-12-jre)
