BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffffff89ca50d8

Asked by Sean Sill on 2019-09-03

I'm trying to bring back my old desktop and turn it into a server. Its running a x99 chipset with 32 gigs of ram and has a Nvidia GTX 960. I pulled the power to the GTX 960 and got the same error log.

I'm running on 16.04 since 18.04 crashes almost immediately on this system. I can attempt a reinstall of that to if it helps.
I did have to add acpi=off to the boot args.

EDIT:
I've run memory test for 2 days with 0 errors on all 32 Gigs of ram.

Like most of these types of bugs this one was a bit wierd. I thought it was a bad driver of some sort. After fiddling with it for awhile. I noticed the bug only happened on CPU 5. I've disabled it in the bios and the system is much healthier. I have yet to see the problem happen again. 18.04 even runs on it now.
