i've installed medibuntu and all codecs and software needed but dvds still won't play

Asked by Full-Fear

I've been looking through all Ubuntu message boards i can can find i have installed everything that has been suggested from several different locations
loads of different applications but i still can't play DVD's where others say they have had success.
I will admit I am a noob when it comes to ubuntu but have quickly picked up how to use alot of the features by several posts i've read through and books that i've brought is there anyone who could please help me i would be extremely
greatful.

i have installed medibuntu
several codecs all successful
Xine
Vlc
Mplayer Codecs

everything has installed successfully but...
my cd/dvd drive won't recognise any dvd's i insert
upon talking to some of the users it seems that ubuntu fails to mount my cd/dvd drive when a dvd is inserted
terminal / Bash states that i'm restricted from accessing my dvd drive???

I think that you didn't install w32codecs correctly
1- add medibuntu to menu.lists
 1.1 : open a terminal and tape : sudo gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
then add this at the end of file :
 ## medibuntu
 deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ intrepid free non-free
2- now, return to the termina and tape :
wget -q http://fr.packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
3- tape : sudo apt-get update
4- sudo apt-get upgrade
5- sudo apt-get install w32codecs

You can also look for the w32codecs with synaptic manager (system->administration->synaptic manager)

Good Luck :)

PS : if you are using hardy, just change this line : deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ intrepid free non-free by deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free non-free

i've follwed the steps you gave and finished with this message in terminal

sketch@Full-Fear:~$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

w32codecs is already the newest version.

hmm
open : applications -> add/remove
then choose all application, then tape : gstream in the serach box, then mark all the codecs that appear and hit the apply button.
I hope this will solve your problem.
PS : if you have good connexion, could you upload one of the movies that you can't read (for expample upload on rapidshare or zshare or any upload/download site)

it appears that i already have installed this software

i have a strong connection but it's not the video files that are having problems it's the viewing of dvds

they have all been PAL version
and REGION 2

dvds such as

Mr deeds
Family guy
American dad
x-men
big daddy
happy gilmore

but my cd/dvd drie won't even aknowledge that there's a DVD disc in there!!

I wanna to be sure of something : your cd/dvd drive recognize cds but doesn't recognize dvds ??

thats correct!

but it didn't have this problem on windows and all i've done is install ubuntu
 with a cd
so there's no problem with the cd drive unless there is a setting on here for the cd drive i haven't found yet

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 ubuntu-restricted-extras

Should sort you out. Do DVDs work in any app (Mplayer, Totem, VLC, Dragon etc)

Try a few, see what happens

Hmmm, what family of graphics card? Intel, nVidia or ati? Did you go for the non-free or did you stick to just the Free? i've taken the risk and installed all the non-free and it's kinda working well. The Free is as in "Freedom of Choice" rather than necessarily being about cash.

Thank you i tried this but it said that all were up date and already installed
and the list of video players you gave i have installed with codecs but none can open the dvd

i can insert a cd and an icon will appear on my desktop telling me there is an audio cd inserted and then i can choose to play with whichever software i like but when i insert a dvd nothing appears on the desktop...
if i go on the home folder where on the left you can see the removable media and document folders such as videos and music it will not allow me to access the cd/dvd if any sort of dvd is in there!
this could very well be the problem but then...
how would i sort that out?

Let's keep the upgrade to ubuntu 9.04 as a final solution
I looked in many websites for your problem, but I couldn't find a solution
eventhough, I want you to do this :
insert a dvd in your cd/dvd drive, then open a terminal and tape : cat /etc/mtab
a dozen of lines will appear, I wanna just to know if you have a line that lok like this :
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 iso9660 ro,nosuid,nodev,utf8,user=YourLogin 0 0

I wanna to be sure if your cd/dvd drive will be mounted when you put a dvd or not ?

Thanks, RachedTN

1. To upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex”, press Alt+F2 and

2. Type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box.

3. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ’9.04′ is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

Thanks, RachedTN

good afternoon everyone
i have downloaded ubuntu 9.04 and burnt that to a cd
and then intalled ubuntu again by running the cd from startup
this time it had no problems what so ever no errors at all and i am back to the basic 9.04
OS
so far i have installed my Nvidia 180 non-free software to gain better resolution
i have gone to the help and support section (SYSTEM-->HELP & SUPPORT)
and have installed:
libdvdnav4, (successful)
libdvdread4, (stated that was already installed)
Gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad (successful)
Gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly (successful)
i have yet to run terminal with this coding

   sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

i have gone to add/remove
(Applications-->Add/Remove)
and used the drop down bar to select all available software
and typed in Gstream
i tried to select all possible updates and add-ons for this application but one of them gave an error message

the message reads

Cannot install 'gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mpegdemux'
This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mpegdemux' the conflicting software must be removed first.
Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict.

before doing anything else i have posted this information in case there is anything i should do
i hope this helps :D

(BTW i have entered a DVD into my drive but there was still no reaction or any suggestion that there was a dvd inserted)

RachedTN : tyhis package is not necessary, so just keep installing other codecs like : w32codecs

RachedTn : after installing all sort of codecs, try what actionparsnip said : mplayer dvd://1

ok so i've been browsing around on ubuntu website and came across this site

now it has a fairly strong warning to it but in my situation do you think this is worthwhile?
Also my computer is just over a year old!
it looks promising but i'd prefer to ask people with more experience first

you should get something like

Hi :)

Have you been able to test the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta1
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
