can not use ubuntu with out cd

Asked by msalim

I installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my laptop nx6110 and it install everything the first time BUT its very slow and if I remove the cd the o\s does not load up.I think its because cd software loaded in a temp file, how do I go about loading from scratch but formatting the hhd. Will it load all the drivers or will I have a problem.Should I load Linux suse instead?

You need to install ubuntu. At the moment you are using ubuntu from the cd.

As well download ubuntu 9.04 its out today and has updated versions of all the software plus new features.

Booting off the Cd always runs a lot slower. Internal hard-drives are much faster for the machine to read. I recommend trying a Dual-boot install so that you can still use your original OS when you don't know how to do something in Ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Most of us still have a dual-boot for odd things here and there.
Good luck and regards from

I only require one o\s ubuntu but the cd does not give all the options like format ect.
What it does do it load the o\s with cd support their has to be a way to load the o\s onto the hhd.
I have requested a later edition of ubuntu two months ago but to date I have received nothing , i cannt download its too big my IT dept will have my head for it!!!

Try ordering another Cd and check what happened to your previous order to from this link
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

It's a bit too busy today but hopefully should be working properly tomorrow sometime. Rather than using such an old Ubuntu it might be better to use a much smaller but more up-to-date tiny distro. SliTaz was released just a few weeks ago and is quite fast because it's so tiny. At 30Mb maybe your IT department wont notice it.
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slitaz
Obviously it's not as rich in features as Ubuntu but it's a good solid distro worth trying. Another thing is that while your IT Dept might be wise stopping people routinely trying huge downloads they may have already downloaded 9.04 for themselves to play with. Picking the right person to approach might get you a copy. Be careful though because some IT Support Staff are very afraid of linux because it's so easy to fix and doesn't suffer viruses and therefore might put them out of a job!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
