Shut down, restart problem in ubuntu 8.04

I'm using ubuntu 8.04 for the last few months. But for a few days I'm getting problem on shut down & restarting my laptop.

A few days ago, I found that shut down & restart option got disappeared from the pannel buttom.
I'm just hibernating the laptop when I dont need it 4 a long time.

I've dual booting with Windows XP SP2. I had 160 GB HD & 1GB RAM in my laptop.
I've installed ubuntu in a 10 GB partition & had updated till now.
My laptop is getting slow down too in the recent days.

Can now anyone suggest me what to do!!!

It really does need to be shutdown and rebooted properly. Hibernate takes a long time to close down at the end of your session and leaves the system vulnerable so it's debatable as to whether it really does save time/resources. A proper reboot now should be able to find and fix a few problems.

Hey Bivabasu Ghosh

On the top task bar right click and click on add to pannel.Another window will open.There choose Custom Application Launcher.Another window will open.There for Name type Shutdown & command as sudo init 0.For Restart type sudo init 6.

(NOTE: I am not sure whether there is space between the number 6 and 0 and init.Try with & without the space)

I am sure this will help you to create a button for shutdown & restart.

lol, ooops, sorry i should have said that. There is a power on/off button in that list already just roll down a few. I'm not sure it's much good. SVikash Koushik seems to have tried it already so perhaps it's not great.

Thnx 4 the suggestion. But that solved my problem partly. Actually the shut down & restart option has disappeared from the quit button. And that is my main probem. Please tell me how I could be able to recover those option in the quit button.

Hey Bivabasu Ghosh

    That will solve your problem.The button that you created using Create Application Launcher is the Shutdown & Restart button.You can always use that as your shutdown & restart button.The button will appear where you right clicked in the first place.
