Expand hard drive memory after image backup from Acronis

Asked by Luis Santos

I just bought a new computer and wanted to upgrade my hard drive from the 512GB SSD it came with to a 2TB SSD I bought online. However, I wanted to keep all of the original drive's files and OS the same, so I used a program called Acronis to upload an exact image of the stock hard drive to the new one I plan to use. Everything worked just fine and I can boot up the computer just fine with Ubuntu and all of the original files I was hoping to keep, but there is one problem: because I backed up an exact copy, the computer is still viewing its own memory as maxed out at 512GB rather than the 2TB the new drive actually has. Is there any way to make it "realize" that it now actually has 2TB of storage and basically "expand" my hard drive? If so, how would I go about doing this?

You can use GPartEd liveCD to extend the drive or use GPartEd in the Ubuntu install desktop. It can resize partitions for you.

If CD isn't an option, you're saying I can just download the GPartEd software directly onto the PC using Ubuntu and do it from there?

Use a USB stick if required. Basically you need to have the system drive unmounted. If you want to extend another partition and it is on the end of the storage then it's dead easy.

Can you help with this problem?
