Cant get avast or similar dowloads to work

Asked by Rich.Morley

I decided to try ubuntu after the usuall nightmares with windows vista.
I follow exact instructions & yet nothing seems to work.
I have spent the last 2 days trying to get things to work, everything I try has some problem attached to it.
I'm determined to get my head around linux & try to become a real computer user.

With avast & all other similar downloads I get.

error: Wrong Architecture 'i386'

I think this is related to having a 64 bit system? But how to fix it? I don't know.

I Downloaded the deb version then punch in the command:

 sudo dpkg -i avast4workstation_1.0.6-2_i386.deb

Then I get this:
 dpkg: error processing avast4workstation_1.0.6-2_i386.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 avast4workstation_1.0.6-2_i386.deb

I wouldn't bother with it, but I want to be able to share files with windows users, without ruining their lives!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am just guessing that you need avast to scan your other windows partitions. In Linux u r 99.9999% safe from viruses :)

To install 32 bit deb packages on 64 bit systems all you need to do is:

1. Open the command line terminal: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
2. Go to the place were you downloaded the file, usually either /home/username or /home/username/Desktop or any other place that you selected.

example:
cd /home/username

3. Install 32 bit package
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture som_32_bit_package.deb

Hope that helps :)
