Repeat problem: After kernel update ubuntu 18.04 fails booting

Asked by William Pabon

Hi
This happened to me last month when updating from 4.18.0.20 to 4.18.0.21(was solved). Now my pc won't boot after the latest kernel update (5.0.0.23). When running in recovery mode, I get different messages on the screen like:

[ 1.595259] Couldn't get the size: 0x8........e
[ 1.595296] MODSIGN; Couldn't get UEFI list
[ 1.607979] Couldn't get size: 0x8......e
[ 1.620703] Couldn't get size: 0x8......e
/dev/sda4:clean, 343479/6881280 files, 8053135/27503104 bloks
Started bpfilter

After the last line, a bunch of lines of data shows that repeats itself like the system falls into an endless loop. Need to turn the machine off to stop. Any advice to troubleshoot this problem is appreciated.

Hi:
If this might help, I found two crash files in the /var/crash folder from friday on. File names are:

nvidia-340.0.crash
_usr_lib_gnome-settings-daemon_gsd-print-notifications.1000.crash

Does the older kernel work OK?

Andrew:

Yes, the previous kernel boots OK.

Then I suggest you report a bug with the new kernel

Ok. Then, how do I make the previous kernel to be the default start up kernel, so that I don't need to choose it every time in the GRUB menu? This is, until this problem is solved. Thanks.
