Did you get an error message saying something like "Please run 'dpkg --configure -a'"?

If so then go up to the top taskbar and click on
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
and enter

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Alternatively reboot and when you get to the boot-menu with lots of Ubuntu choices choose the line that has "recovery mode" at the end of the line. It's worth running a few of the options from this menu about once a month but the "fix x-server" takes all your graphics settings (fancy desktop effects etc) back to their defaults.

Updates are almost always about extra fiunctionality rather than being about security. Your system is already extremely secure just by running linux rather than something else. So don't worry and take your time about fixing this, there's no rush :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
