Cannot install 8.04 or 8.10 on Acer Inspire M1200

Asked by BigMcClucker

I downloaded the recent ISO for 8.10 and attempted to install on an Acer Aspire M1200. I do have the boot sequence set to CD-ROM. My CD-ROM picks up the disk and shows me the initial screen with Install options (ie Install with no changes to current setup, Install on HDD etc). As soon as I select Install on HDD I get a blank screen and the drive stops reading the disk.

So I took this and tried the same image on a differnt disk ...same result, then
I Tried to install 8.04...same result...
Then I hooked up a differnt CD-ROM with both images...same result...
*Only one CD-ROM was connected at a time.
thought it might be a video issue so I used the onboard Video (also ATI) same result.

Unfortunately, I have no other PC to install this on.

Acer Aspire M1200
AMD Dual.....(not sure of speed)
2GB RAM
ATI 2600HD Graphics

This is not the first time I have installed Ubuntu, however, this is the first time I have had a problem. Frankly, I am lost I do not know where to go from here, other than to leave Vista on this PC.

I currently have a HTPC with ubuntu installed, so I know one of the images work but the second CD-ROM I used was used to install Ubuntu on the HTPC, so I know that it is compatible.

Is there something I am missing, or anything i can try, Another way to install?

I am not by any stretch confident with linux but I am trying to learn to make the switch but I can't do that if I cant get installed....

HELP!!!!

try to do a check for your CD.
some time, the iso image is affected when it's downloaded or burned.
you can do this when you have the screen to choose the language (first screen at the boot).

If I understand, I think you mean the Check CD for errors option...

I did try that but i get the same result. A frozen screen.

I have yet to get past that option menu on the PC.

Since I posted I have tried both the images on another PC... and they both got past the option screen and all the way up to the partition editor. I never went past this as I did not want to change my current setup on that PC

Check the ISO you downloaded for errors using MD5 sums. A bad ISO will ALWAYS yield a bad disk, no matter how many times its burned or how slow.

If the ISO is bad you will need to redownload it.

The fact that the screen freezes even on check CD implies your ISO is bad or that your RAM is faulty (as the app runs ENTIRELY in RAM). There is memtest86 on the ISO also which you can use to check your RAM is healthy

Test both and let us know how you get on

Maybe you have also to check your HDD. Sometimes it's the srouce of the freezing.
Also you have to check if the CD you use is compatible with your Inspire (32/64Bits)

Another thing to try : make a bootable USB and try to install from it (a hardware problem with the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM)

Everything seems to be fine. I dont know if the ISO is bad but I did try 4 differnt ones up to this point. The HDD is still good as I can install Windows, and the RAM came back as A-OK.

I don't know what the problem is but I think Im going to be stuck (for the time being at least), install windows and creating a Virtual session with VMware for Ubuntu. If nothing else that will let me in...

Thanks anyways....
