Ubuntu doesnt seem to want to work with my AMD unit however works well on my intel machine...is intel cpu a system/hardware requirement for ubuntu?

Each time I tried install, it would freeze and not process any further at the post screen during install

The installer images are different for different architectures (ie, 32 bit and 64 bit)

If your processor is 32 bit, then download the corresponding image. If you are trying to install the AMD64 image on a 32 bit architecture, you will face this issue.

thanks for the answer, regrettfully i have a 32 bit system with the corresponding image and still no avail. any other suggestions?

Yes... try another version (f.e. 8.04 or 9.04RC if you are using a 8.10-CD now) and/or another fresh burned CD. Often it's just a failed burn.
Also you can try some other distro like Fedora.
