Ubuntu installed on additional hard drive from different machine

Asked by John Fabricius

I had a different PC with Ubuntu installed on it as the primary OS. I now have a Windows 10 PC (different machine) as my primary PC and my hard driver from my old Ubuntu machine as an additional hard drive in my new Windows 10 PC. Windows does not see or recognize the additional Ubuntu loaded hard drive. I need to keep that Ubuntu OS I have installed on that hard drive because it contains information that I need to access. How do I get Windows 10 to see that drive, or how do I install Ubuntu to do a dual boot that doesn't overwrite the Ubuntu installation I already have on that second hard drive?

Try the following:

Switch on the computer, and very early during the boot process you should see some kind of welcome screen (probably with a logo from the computer manufacturer) with an information which key to press for boot device selection.
Press that key and select the hard disk where Ubuntu is installed instead of the default disk with Windows.

Ok, the installation of Ubuntu was installed on a different machine, not the current machine. Will it still boot?

Do you not have backups? If not, why not?
