Problem with printing on Brother MFC-J6535dw

Asked by EigenFunctions

When I try to print on Apache Openoffice (AOO writer or calc) or "qpdfview" (PDF file) and other applications it takes a long time. When I hit the dialog button, there is a delay of 30-45 seconds before the dialog appears. When I finally get to push the "print" button, it takes 30-45 seconds for the dialog to disappear. It then takes 30-45 seconds for the printer to respond, for each page, before printing starts.

There is also a major delay (typically a minute) before applications (including AOO and "qpdfview") start.

All this started a few weeks ago but, seems to be getting progressively worse.

Do other applications exhibit the same behaviour? Have you tried gedit?

Just after I sent the note, I got a Ubuntu update/restart request. At first, the applications started quicker (fast). This has happened before, but the problem returns after a short while and delays continue. I experience delays with most applications (including gedit). That's where is stands now, starting an application takes a long time when before it was quick.

As for the printing problem, the printing still has long delays. That includes pressing the print button.

Just to be clear, there are two problems that may or may not be related. (1) Long delays to start applications. (2) Long delays to print (even just to push the print button).

Both of these remain major problems. The slooooooow start on applications continue. Sometimes, everything works well for a short time, but then launching programs becomes very, very slow. It seems to be true of all programs.

Printing is a major problem. Sometimes the printer starts quickly but there is always a huge delay for each page. Printing 15 pages will take 5 minutes or more. It's NOT the printer because if I make 15 copies manually, it takes a very short time (no delay between pages). Something new is that pushing the "print" button on applications will often take 45 seconds just to recognize the push.

These two problems make it very hard to get work done.

Can anyone help?

Both problems (printing and launching) continue.

I've noticed that if I launch a program using Nautilus:
  (1) Double click on an icon
  (2) Using open with

In both cases the launch is delayed for a long time.

If I use the programs "recently used" list, the file launches in the application immediately. However, this "recently used" feature is not available in all applications and is not convenient nor are all files I need to access in the list.

These two problems are making the use of Ubuntu a major problem.

Can anyone help?

The slow printing continues. Sometimes, for awhile, getting data to the printer is faster. But then, it slows down after awhile. But no matter what, the actual printing takes forever, pausing for each page printed. It's an ugly solution, but I'm considering using some old Windoz machines, connected to my LAN, to print files. Besides speed, the Windoz drivers support all the features of the printers not just the very limited set I get from Linux drivers.

Launching programs is the same kind of problem. For awhile, they (e.g., OpenOffice, gEdit, etc.) launch quickly. For no apparent reason, the launch then takes a long, long time. I tried to launch OpenOffice from the command line (i.e., soffice File.odt), but it still takes forever. I tried opening files from the "Recent Documents" menu and they always seem to launch quickly.

Can anyone help?

I'm going to move the slow launch issue to a different place.

Know that the printing issue still exists and remains a major problem.

Can anyone help?

The problem still exists, I have no solution. This is a major pain...

It seems to be a time problem. That is, whether I'm actively using the laptop or not it happens after awhile.

If I restart, it gets better for awhile, but then starts to delay even for just pushing the button.

A lousy workaround to making multiple copies is to print the file and then use the manual copies feature of the printer.

Can anyone help?

The problem continues.

It's so bad that now when I need multiple copies, I print one and use the printers (scan paper and print) copy option. In that way, it will print 14 copies in a jiffy. Using Ubuntu, it will take about10 minutes.

Can anyone help?
