Lost Firefox bookmarks upon instaling Ubuntu 18.04

Asked by Lane Darnton

On a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 I just installed Ubuntu 18.04, upgrading from 16.04. In the process I seem to have lost all my Firefox bookmarks. Do they still exist? If so, where?

Doesn't Firefox sync itself?
Do you not have a backup?

Hi Lane,

It's possible that they haven't been lost, but just that the "Bookmarks toolbar" is no longer visible. The following instructions are based on my version of Firefox: 60.5.0esr (32-bit). They might help:

1. Click the icon on the top-right that looks like books on a shelf.
2. The first thing on the list should be "Bookmarks". Click on it.
3. Then click on "Bookmarking tools".
4. Then click on "Add bookmarks menu to toolbar".

If those instructions don't match your version of Firefox, try clicking around a bit until you find something like "Show Bookmarks Toolbar".

Please let me know if that helped!

Tom.

I did find the bookmarks toolbar as you described, but my collection of
bookmarks is not there -- just a few bookmarks from the new 18.04
installation.
