18.04 LTS archive loses files

Asked by Keith Haslip

How do I retrieve files from archive using archive function. System responds with message Could not open "filename.ext".
Archive type not supported, I cannot recover the archived file. Is the file stored somewhere? If so how do I get it back?

System is newly-installed Dell Precision 3530 running Xubuntu 18.04LTS.

in the /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory ?
