Audio output only shows headphones that aren't plugged in.

Asked by Matt

Audio does not play through speakers nor headphones. The audio output dropdown box in settings/sound only shows headphones and alsamixer shows Muted headphones at full volume and 0M for the speaker at full volume as well. The audio comes back when I reboot but goes again after an indeterminate amount of time. The only reason I'm asking this is because this is now Ubuntu 19 so I've found no answers on it and the older ones don't match the layout and alsa-tools-gui does not work so I came here.
