Optimization for 386 processors

Asked by vojtech.kresala

I would like to ask why is Ubuntu compiled for i386 architecture since no one cannot run Ubuntu on such weak computer. Can optimization for Pentium-class processors (i586) make Ubuntu run faster?

The speed of it optimization isn't appreciable as could be for desktop like machine. A correct latency set or disk access manager is more important for desktop and servers. For optimize and appreciate some effect would be necessary to optimize all packages of repositories. Now, the generic kernel can detect functions of i686 processors and SMP if it's exist on the CPU. You can see it on dmesg log and /proc/cpuinfo . For it, you can run Gentoo and compare with Ubuntu, you will not appreciate some different speed.

Can you help with this problem?
