Login screen after wakeup does not recognize my password for 5-6 times

Asked by Alan Smithee

I am a new Linux convert. This is my first Linux install.

I have Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS (Release 18.04) installed on a Gateway NV57H58u. Graphics is Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). I have tried updating Ubuntu with no success on this.

After my computer goes to sleep, I wake up the computer and try to login. This happens either when I close the laptop or it goes to sleep naturally. Many times my password will not work. I've noticed that my password works if, after entering it multiple times, I cancel in and out of the login screen and then do a variety of "switch to a different user"( there is only one user), and hitting the "cancel" button. Sometimes if I hit, "use wayland " or whatever it says-the sprocket doesn't always appear-it will let me login. I can sometimes get in after 5 or 6 times of hitting 'cancel', entering the wrong login password, or 'switch to a different user'. Only If I restart my machine- I have it set to automatically login- can I get into the computer. I have also noticed an "exclamation sign in a triangle" when the computer wakes from sleep-when this shows, my password will not work.

Reading on this for some time, a lot it seems it has to do with "lightdm", and "nvidia graphics" and an "Intel graphics". I tried uninstalling Nvidia which I don't believe I have, and installing lightDM using "sudo apt install lightm". This hasn't resolved the issue and it is very inconsistent in letting me into the machine. I have to manually power it down a lot.

Does anyone have any insight? Do I need to provide more information?
Thank you

Does anyone have any idea why this is doing this? It still is doing the
same thing, telling me my password is incorrect and I have to restart the
machine.

I'm replying to this again in hopes it help others. Since this wasn't
resolved I kept using my laptop as usual, with the password bugginess. The
incorrect password prompt kept coming up whenever the computer went to
sleep and woke up. A clear indicator of this was usually the caution sign
next to the password field-the triangle with the exclamation mark in it.
This mark wasn't always there but almost always the correct password failed
when it showed.
I decided to click on it to see if it altered the behavior at all. It had
three options I think, one said "show password". I clicked that after I
had entered in my password. It showed all the characters in my password as
CAPITALIZED, even though I didn't capitalize them or had Caps lock on. I
retyped my password holding down the SHIFT key for the lower case
characters in my password and the correct ones showed up as lowercase.
When I did this, IT WORKED; for me at least.

I think for some reason the caps lock or shift key command is getting
turned on inadvertently after the computer is asleep. This laptop is an
old Gateway NV57H58u running Ubuntu 18.04.2 lts. So maybe try turning the
caps lock and typing in your password or hold down the shift key and type
it in. Hope this helps.
