What's your graphic card?

Note also that 512Mb could be too little ram... Perhaps you should consider installing Xubuntu instead, as it requires less resources to run properly.

My graphic card is 64mb.When i did the memory test it didn't show any errors..
ubuntu 8.04 will work i guess..

I'm not asking what's your graphics card memory size, but what's the manufacturer and model of your card. ATI and NVIDIA cards are not managed properly by Ubuntu 8.10. If yours is one of these, you should probably consider to install 8.04 LTS instead, or making a text-curses based installation by using the Ubuntu alternate CD and then manually installing the appropriate drivers.

And with respect to the memory test, it just checks whether your available memory works right, but NOT whether it's big enough for your installed system... I'd recommend again installing Xubuntu instead of Ubuntu if you only have 512Mb or RAM.

Mine is onboard graphic card..

Now i have installed 8.04 and its working fine.. I think if i install all the updates then i may get the same problem??

Let's see... "onboard graphics card" is *not* the model of your card. You may probably see it if you run the following command on a terminal:

lspci

It will be listed among many other devices.

Anyhow, if 8.04 works fine for you, your graphics card is probably an ATI or NVIDIA. Installing *updates* won't make the problem to reappear, only *upgrading* to 8.10 will. Both things are not the same. You may safely install all *updates* suggested by update-manager (the icon that you probably see in the top panel warning you about available *updates*).

If you feel that your problem is solved, it would be nice if you mark this question as "solved". Just follow the instructions that you'll see (probably) at the bottom of the very e-mail that you'll receive with this answer of mine.

Regards,
