Rsync cannot connect to host machine

Asked by Mark Koontz

Rsync works fine for copying files to a different location on the same machine. But when I try to connect to another server on the same network, it simply dies. When I use grsync graphical interface, I get the following error: rsync error: received SIGINT, SIGTERM, or SIGHUP (code 20) at rsync.c(271) [sender=2.6.9] I have not found anything useful on the error on the internet.

My testing command line is
sudo rsync *.html GW-UB2:\back\
(where gw-ub2 is the second machine. back is a shared directory on that machine)

Both systems use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS desktop version.

My eventual goal is to make the second machine a complete clone of the first.

2 things:
First, Ubuntu and in general Linux based systems use the forward slash for paths instead of the backslash

Second, can you ping GW-UB2 from the command line? You might need to add an entry in /etc/hosts for your second machine so that you can connect to it. Alternatively, you can connect by IP.

Thank you for the response.

The slashes are a typo...I am more used to Windows and Novell networking. I have checked with forward slashes and get the same result.

I can ping the second machine from the first. Using the name and IP
sudo rsync *.html 10.1.1.228:/back/

I get the same result

Try it without sudo. You do not need sudo permissions to use rsync to
connect to a different machine. It should attempt to connect to the
other machine with the same username you are logged in as and prompt you
for a password.

Can you help with this problem?
