Broadcom wifi Limited service

Asked by davidzaq1

Hello,

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 On a Dell Vostro 1500.

My wifi is working but at the top of the screen, there is a small part of the wifi signal showing.
If I click on the wifi signal, it says Broadcom limited wifi.

I did a google search and found a wiki page that said how to determine the right Broadcom driver for the system.

Below is a copy from the terminal.

$ lspci -vvnn | grep -A 9 Network

I am supposed to be using Broadcom BCM4321 for a Dell 1500 acording to the Broadcom on the wiki page but
I do not know what the Qualcom Atheros is .

Can you tell me if there is a way to fix this?

Thank you.

Here is the output from the above but I am not sure it helped the problem. I thought it was supposed to be for diagnostic purposes but it asked me to install something. I hope it did not mess something up. I have to reboot now and will see if my system comes up.
Maybe you can tell me if you see a problem in the output.

Also, at the end shows something which says, type --show-unsupported,
but I only get message "invalid command". I tried it with sudo but got same message.

Thank you.

1. Don't worry, the troubleshooting procedure has installed a few additional diagnostic programs which should not have any negative consequences.

2. I am astonished to see that you have TWO wireless adapters in your system:
a Qualcomm Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (active, in use)
and a Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (which is idle).

I do not see anything wrong, network connection seems to be working.

This network card is not working. While it is showing up, it is not working.
I am having to use one of the free local networks in the area to go online.
I think this other network adapter is interfering with my card.
I cannot find a way to get rid of it.

Is there a way to get rid of it.
It is:

AR928x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (WN6600A 802.11bgn Wireless Mini PCIe Card [AR9281]

I have never seen this wireless adapter show up and I have had this computer since
2007.

Thank you

I ran this command and found that the Atheros is the Network adapter.
I am supposed to be running the Broadcom BCM 4311

The Atheros is interfereing with the Broadcom adapter. Is there a way to get rid of the
Atheros and just have the Broadcom?

$ lspci | grep -i "Wireless\|WiFi"
0d:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

Thank you.

Your output is incomplete, you have three network devices in your system:

22: PCI 300.0: 0200 Ethernet controller
   Model: "Broadcom BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX"
   Vendor: pci 0x14e4 "Broadcom"
   Device: pci 0x170c "BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX"
   SubVendor: pci 0x1028 "Dell"
   SubDevice: pci 0x0228

30: PCI d00.0: 0282 WLAN controller
   Model: "Lite-On WN6600A 802.11bgn Wireless Mini PCIe Card [AR9281]"
   Vendor: pci 0x168c "Qualcomm Atheros"
Device: pci 0x002a "AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)"
SubVendor: pci 0x11ad "Lite-On Communications Inc"
SubDevice: pci 0x6600 "WN6600A 802.11bgn Wireless Mini PCIe Card [AR9281]"

33: PCI c00.0: 0282 WLAN controller
Model: "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card"
   Vendor: pci 0x14e4 "Broadcom"
   Device: pci 0x4315 "BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY"
   SubVendor: pci 0x1028 "Dell"
   SubDevice: pci 0x000b "Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card"

The first one is for a cable connection, and the other two both are wireless adapters.
I do not know why there are two Wifi adapters, but it is no surprise that one of them is idle if the other one is active.

Can you check in the BIOS settings, whether you can disable one of them?

Just for diagnostic purposes, what is the output of the command
lspci | grep -i -e "Wireless|WiFi|WLAN"

Hello

I copied the command but there was no output,

$ spci | grep -i -e "Wireless|WiFi|WLAN"

Command 'spci' not found, did you mean:

  command 'sci' from deb scheme2c
  command 's2ci' from deb scheme2c
  command 'xpci' from deb xdiagnose
  command 'spc' from deb supercat
  command 'lspci' from deb pciutils

Try: sudo apt install <deb name>

stan@roo:~$ lspci | grep -i -e "Wireless|WiFi|WLAN"

I just remembered that I bought a printer, an Epsion wireless printer and a cable.
When I plugged in the cable to the laptop, I got a message saying, searching for drivers.....found driver.

I am wondering if the Athesos driver is from that. what I could find is this network driver is for windows.

I did check the bios and cannot find any place which mentions netword drivers

Sorry, my fault, it should have been a capital E

And it is not just a driver, you have two pieces of WLAN _hardware_ inside your system (alt least according to the diagnostic output).

How did this hardware and driver get into my system?
I never had anything but the Broadcom in my computer.

Unless this was installed through livepatch.

From what I can find, the network adaptor Qualcomm Atheros is for windows. I think this was installed when I got the printer drivers.

Anyway, I found a few commands on the forum, I ran them and put the outputs here.
Maybe you can find something here to tell me how to get rid of this Qualcomm driver.

These are the lines showing the WLAN hardware:

0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
0d:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)

There are two WLAN devices built into your system. and of course Ubuntu loads drivers for these.

Your sentence "the network adaptor Qualcomm Atheros is for windows" does not make sense. Hardware is independent from the operating system.

I do not understand why you see a problem with your system. As far as I can see from the output of the diagnostic procedure, one of the devices is actively working, and the other one is idle.

Why do you think that this is wrong and something has to be corrected?

When I the Qualcomm device is not seeing my mobile phone's hotspot. The broadcom does.
When I turn the Qualcomm Adapter off all WiFi disappear except my mobile phone but I cannot connect to it
Turning the Broadcom off and tuning on the Qualcomm, all the WiFi signals show up except my phone.

I have been using my phone and the Broadcom for the last few years with no problems.
But now I cannot use my phone at all, only the free WiFi next to me but is very week, I have to log into it when it is working but
when it is working, it only allows me to use it for a few minutes then disconnects.

I need to use the hot spot on my mobile device. The Qualcomm adapter will not let me.
It will only pick up one signal which is the free one but that does not work well.
So, I need to get rid of it so I can use my Broadcom. which does connect to my phone.
Or, at least try to figure out how to turn the Qualcomm adapter off.

It is true that the wifi card and one of the devices is working.
But as I said, it will not connect to my mobile device, in fact, it does not even see my mobile device.
So, I need to turn it off.

How do you turn the two devices on and off?

U an not sure what you are asking me.

But I do not know how to turn on or off the devices.
I am not an expert with computers. I thought these things just turned on by themselves.

There is a switch for the wifi ob the side of the computer but I never touch this.

I have problems to understand what you are writing:

In comment #15 (2019-03-23 05:13:27 UTC) you wrote:
"When I turn the Qualcomm Adapter off…" and "Turning the Broadcom off…"

In comment #17 (2019-03-23 20:15:44 UTC) you wrote:
"I do not know how to turn on or off the devices."

This is contradictory.

When I click on the wifi signal, it shows a local free wifi service and the Qualcomm Atheros wifi.

If I click on the Qualcomm name there are the words that say 'Turn Off"
If I click, turn off, the local wifi service goes away then all that is there is the Broadcom wifi and the Qualcomm wifi.

If I select the Broadcom wifi it does not do anything. I get no signal. It does not pick up the local wifi or my phone hotspot.
If I click on the qualcomm again it only picks up the local wifi and not my pone.

I can tun the wifi on and off.
I did not understand this to be the network adaptor.

Sorry, I did not understand.

What is the SSID name of your phone?
Is it shown in the output of the command

sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'

I do not think there is anything wrong with my phone.
My phone is picked up on other computers and devices.
It only changed when this Qualcomm showed up on my system.

I understand you say the Qualcomm driver is a hardware installed on my laptop but it has never showed up until
I updated to 18.04.

The SSID for my phone is AirbusA, Yes, it is shown in the command.

Here is the output from the above command:

If the SSID of the phone is shown on the output, then it should be possible to connect to it.
I do not see any reason why this wouldn't work.

All I can say is that it is not working.

The Qualcomm will not connect to the phone.
The Broadcom will connect to the phone.

I need to get rid of the Qualcomm or find a way to make it see the phone.

If you do not know how to work with the Qualcomm to do this can you at least tell me how to remove it?

I have been using the Broadcom for years with no problems.

You could try commands like

sudo rfkill block wlp13s0

to disable the Qualcomm device.

Is there a way just to turn it off and then turn it back on again if I need it?

This is what I wrote in my previous comment.

Look at the man pages of the rfkill command.

sudo rfkill block wlp13s0
sudo rfkill unblock wlp13s0

What happens if you selectively switch one of the wireless devices off, e.g. with the commands

sudo rfkill block wlp13s0
sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'
sudo rfkill unblock wlp13s0
sudo rfkill block wlp12s0
sudo iwlist scan | grep -Ei 'chan|ssid'
sudo rfkill unblock wlp12s0

(wait half a minute between each of these commands)

Thank you for your reply.

I tried one of the commands above.
Here is the output.

sudo rfkill block wlp13s0
[sudo] password for stan:
rfkill: invalid identifier: wlp13s0

Thank you.

The output now is different from what the same command gave half a year ago.
I am not sure whether any of the output from that time is still valid, so I recommend to close this question and (in case that the problem still exists) to create a new question document and to start from scratch.

Can you help with this problem?
