low spec PC

Asked by Steve Taylor

I have a Compaq Evo N410c with PIII, 256MB RAM and an external USB1 CD drive.

I have tried to install Ubunto from the downloaded CD and it boots all ok but hangs when I try to install it onto my hard drive from within the Ubunto environment. The CD drive is working like mad but I fear that it just does not have the capacity to cope with the installation.

Is there anyway other way of installing Ubunto? alternatively could you recommend an alternative Linux product that would be easier to install on my low spec PC.

Note - I am assuming that Linux works better than Microsoft on low spec PCs. Is this correct?

Take a look at this page for more information about installing on low memory systems:-

As to your last question - it entirely depends on how you measure "better".

You could always obtain an Ubuntu alternate CD. This installs in a text-only manner, and uses much less RAM.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

check the box at the bottom, to get the alternate desktop CD

Can you help with this problem?
