Grub error message 25

Asked by Ted Pritchard

Help I'm in serious trouble!
In the course of trying to get 8.10 to work on my daughter's laptop (an ongoing problem that now seems to be CD drive related) I was trying to get an installation copy onto a USB pendrive. I booted my own machine (running 8.04) from an 8.10 CD and successfully used the facility System/Administrator/Create a USB startup disc. I then attempted to restart my own machine from the USB drive as suggested.
End result was a Grub error message 25 and no obvious way of getting past it.
I suspect my problem results from having previously followed this link " http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-810-persistent-flash-drive-install-from-live-cd/ ", then had a senior's moment and forgot to remove it first.
Can someone please help me with the exact steps to remedy this?

Error 25 : Disk read error
This error is returned if there is a disk read error when trying to probe or read data from a particular disk.

Follow the instructions here to install from a usb stick
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

Hope that helps

Thanks, but you have misunderstood my problem. In the course of testing the usb stick installation copy (created off 8.10 as recommended), I've managed to corrupt my own machine (running 8.04). My #1 problem (urgent) is getting my own PC operating correctly again.

Further help would be much appreciated.

Regards, Ted

Problem solved! I entered the BIOS and changed the booting sequence to make USB the last option. Even through previously I had deactivated the USB option, that apparently wasn't enough. Phew! - what a relief.
Many thanks to all those who took the time to consider this problem for me.
