Testing the waters in developing and programing

Asked by Kate Chapin

Am an "older student" and a huge fan Ubuntu. I am just beginning to learn, and would like to learn the language, process, or how to get started developing for Ubuntu. (for myself mainly, but if I can improve enough, maybe I can contribute also) Can someone point me in the right direction. I am basically starting from scratch, and have limited knowledge of the programming end. I am eager to learn, but don't know where to begin. I have been using computers and working on them since DOS. But would like to learn more.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
