gnome-calculator opens in wrong workspace and can't be accessed

Asked by dbclinton

For the last couple of days, I've been unable to use gnome-calculator on my Ubuntu 18.04 desktop. I'll click on the launch icon (or run gnome-calculator from the terminal) and the app just won't appear. After digging around a bit, I realized that the calculator has opened, but it's in a different workspace. And, even though hitting the Windows key shows me the calculator, clicking on it doesn't give me access. The only option I've got that works is to shut it down.
I've tried removing the snap and reinstalling it, but there's no improvement.
Any ideas?

You can also use wmctrl to control the workspace it opens on

E.g:

wmctrl -r gnome-calculator -t 0

Thanks.
I installed wmctrl and ran
   wmctrl -r gnome-calculator -t 0
...but it just died silently - no output and no calculator. I don't have experience with Gnome extensions, so I'm having a some trouble installing the auto-move-windows. It doesn't appear in the apt repo under gnome-shell-extensions and the extension's home page gave me a

error using Chrome.
But either way, these seem like workarounds: the app should just work - the way it has for me since I installed 18.04 eight months ago until the other day.

Is there something obviously dumb I might have done the other day to make the calculator start launching in the wrong workspace?
To be honest, I used to be a huge user of workspaces - often filling up three or even four through a session. But with the shift in the feature usability that came with 18.04/Gnome 3, I never invested the time to figure it out. So I might just be doing something wrong.

It seems to me that new workspaces are tied to specific apps, which doesn't fit the I used it. For instance, I used to have multiple browsers, gedit docs, or terminals open in multiple workspaces. I wanted to keep multiple projects separate even when they all needed parallel instances of applications. Now, however, as far as I can tell, I can't have browsers open in more than one workspace...or maybe I just haven't figured it out yet.
