Xubuntu 18.10. won't reboot after installing yesterdays updates

Asked by Thomas Kreitmair on 2019-02-05

I did install updates yesterday on my Lenovo T400 with Xubuntu 18.10, however it would not reboot when the system triggered a reboot. I did re-install Xubuntu18.10 from a DVD, the system worked fine until it did install updates - same issue, does not boot after updates were installed, it just shows a black screen with no prompt. I suspect that maybe Grub is damaged. Anyone else with a similar problem?

Try the boot option:

nomodeset

Yes I tried that. However, Xubuntu would start only by pressing the shift button and selecting rescue mode in the upcoming GRUB menu, even after updating GRUB. Funny thing is after installing the latest kernel update Xubuntu is starting in normal graphic mode again.
