How can I disable system beep?

Asked by luwen

I do not know whether this is a bug: the motherboard has a short beep while I am shutting down or rebooting the computer (during the shutdown procedure).
This may not a big problem, but the sound makes me uncomfortable.

my system:
Linux lu 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This isn't a bug as far as I'm aware, and there are ways to disable it:http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/07/26/turning-off-the-system-hardware-beep-linux-tutorial/ . As such, I'm converting this bug to a question.

System>preferences>sound
The sounds tab.
Uncheck the play alert sound box.

before I post the problem i already tried:
System>preferences>sound
The sounds tab.
Uncheck the play alert sound box
but this didn't work.

this (http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/07/26/turning-off-the-system-hardware-beep-linux-tutorial/) indeed works, but just as the words in the link "the system beeps for a reason–it’s trying to tell you something–you should leave it on". use "sudo modprobe -r pcspkr" to stop beep just like stop a painful patient cry out by keeping his mouth shutdown.

now the beep does not make me uncomfortable any more, may be the reason in "the system beeps for a reason" more important .

i think the the answer above solved disable system beep, but did not solve why the ubuntu beep in my computer, and just disable system beep certainly not the question i want to ask .

if i just simply "uncheck the play alert sound box", or remove the " pcspkr" module, i just feel like my computer get sick but i just pretend to not known.

i also want to say thanks to you all!

In terminal type
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
Then add to the bottom of the file.
blacklist pcspkr
Then reboot.

Hope that helps
Shane

You may deactivate splash in menu.lst, to see in case error messages during shutdown or reboot.

Maybe logfiles give a hint?
